Things that crack me up #38

Which is more disturbing? That the disabled wheelchair symbol guy is naked or that the nondisabled stick figure guy is not wearing pants?

Image description: A color photo of restroom signage in the Honolulu, Hawaii, airport, posted on Flickr by Wha'ppen. On a black or dark brown background two white stick figures for the mens' restroom: The universal access wheelchair guy, looking like he always does in simple white outline, sits next to the mostly universal stick figure symbol for the mens' restroom -- a nondisabled standing guy in simple white outline. Except the nondisabled guy is wearing a very festive Hawaiian shirt , yellow with red flowers. The effect of the colorful shirt on the otherwise white figure is that he appears to be wearing only a shirt. Disabled guy doesn't get a shirt.

Mr. TAB is not only wearing a festive shirt, he's wearing a necklace. The combination of Hawaiian shirt and necklace on a man is an indicator of a socially awkward situation. This is why Wheelie is facing away from Mr. TAB, He'd make a break for it if only he wasn't hemmed in by the border of the sign.

It's an epidemic:

It's not a "necklace": it's a lei. Leis for men -- especially tourists -- are often small shells, or nuts, or plain twisted leaf instead of big flowers.

That said, it would be nice if the wheelchair guy got a little color, eh?

No, no, that can't be a lei. I considered that possibility and rejected it in the face of the necklace's decidedly unfloral appearance.

But then, you did say shells.... Hmmm. Possible. So, he's wearing a black lei?

One of my favorite access signs ever: This wheelchair guy has a snorkle and polka dot swim trunks.

I think its disablist for Wheelchair Guy to be denied both a festive shirt and a necklace or lei.

Honestly, I am disturbed that neither of them is wearing so much as a Speedo.

(I'm not being prudish, you understand; I just think it's reckless to leave one's tender parts so unprotected for so long in such a sunny clime.)

Or perhaps that pantless AB is standing way too close to naked wheelchair guy?

An old post, but I just wanted to tell you that I'm now practically in tears from laughing in a public library thanks to linking to this photo via the Disability Studies blog.
