The art of Riva Lehrer

These portraits of disabled people by an artist with a disability aren't new, but I enjoy them.

I've seen Riva's portrait of Eli Clare at her opening in Chicago last year.

A photograph, and the one of Eli is exquisitely rendered, cannot capture the emotional impact of the portrait.

I've known Eli for a number of years. All I can say is that Riva is a conjurer and magician. Her portrait of Eli is something to apprehend, and nearly impossible to describe verbally.

Dear Gimp,

Thanks for the nice notice on your blog. Wanted to let you and your bloggamigos know that I'm helping curate a show at the Chicago Cultural Center for April 2006. The show will be of art dealing with disability. We're looking for the following:

Artists with disabilities, who regularly explore aspects of disability in their work. Art by disabled artists that does not address the topic will not be appropriate for this exhibit. We are hoping to bring a new, fearless look at our experience to a serious venue.

Almost any media will be considered, though there will be size and piece-per-artist restrictions due to limited gallery space.

The Cultural Center will have final say on what will be displayed.

This show is constructed around professional artists who have a track record, but there are also going to be shows here in Chicago during April 2006 that will be looking for new or emerging artists. Calls for these shows will be made public this summer - some can be seen in the Chicago Artist's Coalition newsletter.

Please send any recommendations or inquiries to me by the end of July 2005. Persons who have a website or presence on the web should send me the URL. We may not be able to get back to you right away, but will try to respond by early Fall.

We have a pretty long roster already, but there have to be people out there that we don't know about. If you're going to SDS in SF this June, feel free to bring materials with you & pass them on to me.

Thanks, and we hope to get some new work up on the website this summer -

Best, Riva Lehrer
